New Year, New Ball

December 31, 2006

As you all know the NBA is going back to the old leather NBA basketball starting tommorrow which a lot of people are happy about. A guy I play with actually has the official NBA basketball. The ball was kinda weird, he said it was the same ball they play with but I don’t know. If that is the hard thing the play with, I don’t know why they would want to go back to that. Personally my favorite basketball is the Spalding TF-1000, the TF stands for Top Flite, thats the basketball they should be playing with.

ESPN Early Trimester Awards

December 30, 2006

Espn’s Mark Stein has evaluated the first 1/3 of the NBA season and given out his awards. A lot of things he has said I agree with. He has Steve Nash as the West MVP. He has Ben Gordon as the sixth man. I do not agree with him picking Michael Redd as the MVP of the Eastern conference.

I think Redd is a good player but MVP of the East would have to go to Arenas if you ask me. Even though he started off slow he has made up for it and is becoming more know to basketball fans. Wade has been good but his team is losing. Lebron has also been good and you can make a case for him but I have to go with Arenas. I just think he is a better all around player. He averages more steals, assists, and rebounds then Redd, plus he is just better to watch.

Worst Free Agent Signings Of The Summer

December 28, 2006

Over the summer a bunch of teams went after a small crop of free agents to fill some of their teams small needs like a shooter or rebounder. A lot of teams that got these pieces were happy, just as their fans were but now we are seeing what a big mistake some of those signings were.

The Phoenix Suns signed Marcus Banks to a 5 year $21 million deal They thought he could come in and run the offense so that Nash could play less minutes. It hasn’t worked out that way. Nash is still playing 36 minutes a game while Leandro Barbosa is getting most of his backup minutes. Marcus Banks is only averaging 10 minutes a game. In those minutes is averaging 4 ppg.

Vladimir Radmanovic was supposed to be a big time scoring threat from the outside for the Lakers. So far he has not done much, his numbers are down from last season. It seems like he was getting a chance to prove himself at the beginning of the season but Brian Cook and Ronny Turiaf stepped up and took some of his minutes. He is shooting the three at 38 percent so he is doing what he was brought in to do, but he is being paid a lot just for that.

Lookout For Kevin Durant

December 26, 2006

I was watching the Texas versus Tennesee game this weekend and I was really impressed with the freshman Kevin Durant. He is 6 foot 10 inches tall and very versitle. He did everything from shooting jumpers to block shots to bringing the ball up court. Everyone is talking about Greg Oden but their are a lot of other good freshman playing in college right now.

Durant is projected to be the 2nd pick in a very deep draft. You can check out the 2007 mock draft at NBAdraft.net

Mo Williams Is Better Than TJ Ford

December 23, 2006

Last year when TJ Ford came back from injury to claim his starting spot I was pissed at the Milwaukee Bucks. After seeing what Mo Williams did the season before it was clear that he was the better player. The biggest difference between him and Ford is that he can shoot and score. The Bucks dumped Ford on the Raptors and I was looking forward to seeing Mo get off but he started the year off slow and had me wondering what was up. He started the season shooting around 38%.

The last few weeks he has been getting his shot back and showing why trading TJ Ford was a great thing, he even had a triple double the other night versus the Heat. He is averaging 16.7 ppg, 6.3 apg, shooting 45% and shooting 33% on threes, not to mention the 5.3 rpg he averages. He is giving Michael Redd a lot of help in the backcourt that he did not have with TJ Ford.

TJ Ford on the other hand is averaging 15.1 ppg, 8.2 apg, 4 rpg, and shooting 44% and shooting 30% on just 23 three point attempts.

There has been talk about the Bucks going after Billups in the offseason but do the need him? Mo Williams is playing well although he is small and need to work on his Defense but he has worked his way up in the league as a second round pick hopefully he will kep improving and stay with the Buck for a few more years.

Iverson Is Headed To Denver

December 19, 2006

Allen Iverson is expected to be traded to the Denver Nuggets for Joe Smith, Andre Miller and two 2007 1st round draft picks. Many people such as Steven A. Smith are saying it is a good deal for both teams. To me it looks better on Denver’s end because the got a future hall of famer for a player being used sparingly, and aging point guard, and a few draft picks. This trade helps Denver because they add a guy that can score and that wants to win. Also they get to keep JR Smith and Nene, two guys that were floating around in the rumors.

They should have a starting 5 of Iverson, Smith, Najera, Melo, and Camby. Lets also remember that this team should still be intact next season and will have Kenyon Martin back.

On Phillies side they have an expiring contract with Joe Smith, and a pass first point guard in Miller. He should be able to get guys like Webber and Igudola more quality shots. Plus they have the two 2007 draft picks in what many are saying will be a very deep draft. With all those picks and Smith expiring contract they have the flexibility to make more moves before the trading deadline or on draft day.

Melo Out 15 Games, May Not Make All-Star Team Now

December 18, 2006

Suspensions have been handed down and they are a bit harsh if you ask me. In the Detroit brawl I think Jermaine O’Neal got about a 30 to 35 game suspension for fighting with fans. This was a fight between players and these guys got half and 1/3 of what O’Neal got. You can also look at the Ray Allen/Keyon Dooling fight last season, Ray got a 5 game suspension and Keyon got a 3 game suspension. Me I think the most games handed out should have been about 7 or 8.

Now lets talk about Melo, this guy is going to miss a load of games so it will hurt his team a lot because he is their best player and averages 31.7 per game. It also hurts him in two other ways he looks bad because he hit Collins and ran. That makes him look like a punk and I know he is embarassed. Another thing is that the west is so stacked with forwards, coach won’t vote him in now. If you have to vote for a guy that plays every game versus a guy that missed 15 you are going to go with the guy that plays. I also have to mention that it is possible for the Nuggets to be under .500 once the coaches get ready to vote the bench players in. When voting coaches seem to go with the guys on winning teams.

Denver Versus The Knicks

December 17, 2006

For those of you that have not seen the fight between the Knicks and the Nuggets here is the link. It wasn’t really that bad. I saw JR Smith punch Nate Robinson and Melo crashed on Mardy Collins at the end and made him fall.

Espn.com Trade Machine

December 14, 2006

Espn has a great little toy you can play with called the ESPN trade machine where you can go and be the general manager and see if you can make trades work out. I played with a few Allen Iverson deals. It seems so easy doing it at home.

This trade sends Iverson to the Lakers

This trade sends him to Dallas

Play around with it, it is kinda fun.
